Musical Directors

Our Director and Assistant Director

Joel Bootsma

Our director Joel has been leading us since 2018 and while he is fairly new to the barbershop harmony art form, his musical background spans well over two decades! He is both a musical instructor and performer.

For 12 years Joel has provided Suzuki method violin and viola lessons to students of all ages through his business, Red Door String Studio. He has a unique way of connecting with his students and ensures lesson plans are geared toward their individual learning needs. His compassionate nature enables him to work well with the different behaviours of children to help them achieve their musical goals.

With violin in hand, Joel has been a proud member of Quinte Symphony for more than nine years. You can find him with the ensemble performing throughout the year at many venues in the Quinte and surrounding areas.

Joel was a school teacher for 18 years and taught everything from general music and band at the elementary level to concert band, choir and jazz band at the high school level. He even organized week-long band tours including inter-provincial and International travel for groups of about 80 students.

Joel attended the week-long 2019 Harmony University held at Belmont University in Nashville, TN in July 2019, and he continues to hone his craft. His dedication to Bay of Quinte Chorus, and to the barbershop art form itself, is nothing short of fabulous, and we are lucky to call him our Director!

Colleen Stickle

Our assistant director, Colleen has been a member of Bay of Quinte Chorus since 2006 when she started singing with the leads. In 2009 she joined the basses and became their section leader.

In 2013 she accepted the position of assistant director, and completed the Director’s Certification program. Colleen likes to keep us all on our toes with her creative and fun vocal warmups, and proudly books us to sing at a variety of events.

Colleen currently sings with the dynamic quartet, Vivacious and has also served as a valued member on the Board of Directors over the years in a number of different administrative positions.

Colleen started singing harmony at an early age and her musical background is richly varied and includes sacred, secular and classical genres. She enjoys the solid vocal training offered by Sweet Adelines and is always happy to promote a cappella style to audiences near and far.
